Custom Standing Seam · San Diego County

Metal Roofing in San Diego, built to outlast the house.

SW Metal Roofing is San Diego County's custom standing seam manufacturer. We form our own panels to spec, an 18-inch snap-lock profile with a 1.75-inch seam, and install every other kind of metal roof too, with custom copper by commission. We do both roofing and solar, so a home that already has panels gets one team for the new roof and the solar. Every roof is engineered for the coast and backed by a lifetime warranty against leaks.

Our Standard Profile

A custom manufacturer of standing seam roofs.

We offer every kind of metal roof, but our focus is one we form to spec ourselves: an 18-inch clip-lock (snap-lock) standing seam panel with a 1.75-inch seam and concealed fasteners. It is 24-gauge steel as standard, and we can go heavier to 22-gauge or thinner whenever a project calls for it. You choose the surface: striations, pencil ribs or a flat pan.

Striations

Fine parallel lines rolled the length of the pan. They stiffen the panel and quiet the oil-canning that flat metal can show in raking light.

Pencil Ribs

A pair of slim, rounded ribs break up the pan for a crisper, more defined line that reads well across a long roof plane.

Flat Pan

A clean, unbroken pan for the most minimal, modern standing-seam look, where the raised seams do all the talking.

Also formed to spec

Mechanically seamed, for low slopes and high wind

When a roof runs to a low pitch or sits in high-wind or snow country, we form a mechanically seamed profile instead: a 1.5-inch seam with floating clips and a butyl-sealed lock, rated down to a 1:12 slope. Same concealed-fastener build, engineered for the harder conditions.

The Value of Metal

Why choose a metal roof in San Diego?

A metal roof is the last roof most San Diego homeowners will ever buy. It lasts 50 years or more, reflects the coastal sun to cut cooling costs, carries a Class A fire rating, and stands up to salt air and Santa Ana winds that shorten the life of a shingle roof. The upfront cost is higher. Over the life of the home, it is usually lower.

Lasts 50+ Years

Two to three times the lifespan of asphalt shingles, with no curling, cracking or granule loss over time.

Reflects the Heat

Metal bounces solar heat instead of absorbing it, lowering attic temperatures and summer cooling bills.

Built for the Coast

Marine-grade coatings and sealed seams handle salt air and wind-driven rain from La Jolla to Coronado.

Adds Resale Value

A premium roof that buyers recognize, with curb appeal and a warranty that transfers with the home.

Metal vs Shingle

Metal roof or asphalt shingle: what's the real difference?

For most San Diego homes, a metal roof costs more on day one and less over the life of the house, because it can replace two or three shingle roofs. Here is how the two compare on the things that matter.

Roofing + Solar

What a metal roof and solar look like together.

If you are weighing both upgrades at once, this is the finished result: a standing seam metal roof with the solar array sitting flush across it. Because we do roofing and solar, one team handles the whole sequence instead of a roofer and a solar contractor pointing at each other.

01

We detach your panels

Our crew takes the existing array down and stores it safely on site. No second contractor to schedule, and no gap where your roof sits open waiting on someone else.

02

The new metal roof goes on

A full tear-off, deck inspection and a standing seam roof formed to spec. This is where a 20-year roof becomes a 50-year one, while the panels are already off.

03

Solar goes back on top

The array is reset and back in service. On standing seam the mounts clamp onto the raised seams, so the panels hold without a single hole drilled through the new roof.

Standing seam is the best roof to pair with solar. Zero roof penetrations under the array means the panels never become the reason the roof leaks.

Metal Roof Types

Which metal roof is right for your home?

Standing seam is the system most San Diego homes choose, and the one we install most. Each type suits a different style, budget and look. We help you pick the right fit for your home and the coast, then fabricate it to spec.

Answers

Metal roofing questions San Diego homeowners ask

The questions we hear most, answered plainly. Everything a San Diego homeowner needs to know before committing to a metal roof, without the sales pitch.

How much does a metal roof cost in San Diego?

Most residential metal roofs in San Diego range from about $15,000 to $40,000 installed, depending on the metal type, roof size and complexity. Standing seam steel sits in the middle of that range, while custom copper sits at the top. We start every project with a free assessment and a written, line-item quote so you know the exact figure before any work begins.

How long does a metal roof last in San Diego's climate?

A properly installed metal roof lasts 50 years or more in San Diego, two to three times longer than asphalt shingles. Standing seam steel and copper systems are built to handle coastal salt air, intense sun and seasonal storms without the cracking, curling or granule loss that ages a shingle roof.

Is a metal roof worth it compared to asphalt shingles?

For most San Diego homeowners, yes. A metal roof costs more upfront but typically outlasts two or three shingle roofs, reflects heat to lower cooling bills, carries a Class A fire rating and adds resale value. Over the life of the home it is often the lower total cost, because it can be the last roof you buy.

Do metal roofs work well in coastal areas like Del Mar and La Jolla?

Yes. Coastal homes are exactly where metal roofing earns its value. We specify marine-grade coatings and corrosion-resistant systems built for salt air, and we detail every penetration and seam to keep wind-driven coastal rain out. Standing seam and copper both perform exceptionally well within a few miles of the ocean.

Does a metal roof make a house hotter?

No, the opposite. Metal reflects solar heat rather than absorbing it the way dark asphalt does, and reflective finishes can lower attic temperatures and summer cooling costs. In San Diego’s sun, a metal roof is one of the more energy-efficient choices a homeowner can make.

Are metal roofs noisy when it rains?

No. A modern metal roof installed over solid decking and underlayment is no louder than any other roof. The drumming sound people picture comes from bare metal over open framing, like a barn. A residential metal roof sits on a full deck, so rain sounds the same as it would under shingles.

What is standing seam metal roofing?

Standing seam is a metal roofing system with raised vertical seams that lock the panels together and hide every fastener. With no exposed screws to back out or leak over time, it is the most weather-resistant and lowest-maintenance metal roof available, and it gives a home a clean, modern line. It is our most-installed system.

Do you offer a warranty on metal roofs?

Yes. Every SW Metal Roofing installation is backed by a lifetime warranty against leaks, in addition to the manufacturer warranty on the metal and finish. We are a licensed and insured San Diego contractor and we stand behind our workmanship for the life of the roof.

Can you install a metal roof over an existing roof?

In some cases, yes, a metal roof can be installed over one existing layer if the decking is sound and local code allows it. More often we recommend a full tear-off so we can inspect and repair the deck, install proper underlayment and warranty the entire system. We confirm the right approach during your free assessment.

Can you install a metal roof if I already have solar panels?

Yes, and it is one of the most common projects we take on. Because we do both roofing and solar, one team handles the whole job: we detach your existing panels, install the new metal roof, then reset the solar on top. Standing seam is the best roof to pair with solar, because the panels clamp onto the raised seams without a single hole drilled through the roof. You end up with a 50-year roof and your solar back in service, coordinated by one company instead of a separate roofer and solar installer.

How long does a metal roof installation take?

Most residential metal roof installations take three to seven working days, depending on roof size, the system chosen and the amount of custom fabrication involved. Copper and complex standing seam roofs take longer because much of the metal is formed by hand. We give you a firm timeline with your written quote.

What areas of San Diego do you serve?

We serve homeowners and businesses across San Diego County, including La Jolla, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Coronado, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Poway, Escondido, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, El Cajon and the surrounding communities. If you are in the county, we can assess your roof.
